Southern Cross Country Champs
Posted by Nolan in Cross Country, Everything Else, Races & Reports on January 30th, 2011
The Southern Cross Country Championships were held on Saturday on the notorious Parliament Hill Course which is fabled for it’s hills, mud, extra long distance and high standard of club runner. On show were 3 Beckenham representatives, Chris Minns, Stuart Scott (running for Kent) and our favourite 2nd claimer Clare Elms in her Dulwich Vest. Chris last ran this race back in 98 and shares the following race report.
Chris writes…..
A quick report from Saturdays race at Parliament Hill fields:
Chaos at the start (no one expecting the gun to go off) meant that I was in the rare position of being at the front of a pen and well up the field at the top of the first hill. I kept going in this style for the first lap, and sat in about 60th coming into the last stetch of the first lap.
After the first set of hills on the second lap (7km in) I was in so much trouble I thought I was going to have to drop out. I tried to relax and use all that stamina training to ride it out and not lose too many places. This sort of worked until about the 12k mark, when I realized I couldn’t feel my arms anymore. I kept trying to hang in there, but got caught by a few familiar faces. Still managed to finish up 78th, 5 places inside my last attempt on this course in 1998! I wanted to push myself to test my fitness today, but top 60 at 5k was too early to be that far up the field. I really suffered trying not to go backwards the last half of the race.
Saw Stuart before and after, but don’t know how he got on. Claire Elms had an excellent race, finishing 14th or 15th. Great to have Mel, Will, and the dogs for support. I heard a few others cheering for Beckenham as well – maybe we could get a contingent out next time?

Beckenham Running Club makes donation to Demelza Hospice
Posted by Nolan in Beckenham 10k Trail Race, Beckenham Photo's, Club Events, Everything Else on January 27th, 2011
Before the Beckenham runners made there way out for another wintery Wednesday night run, we had the pleasure of welcoming Kate Najdowski from Demelza Hospice Care for Children to the Foxgrove Road club house.
Kate was there to accept a cheque presented by Andrew Rees, the club Treasurer, for £1,000 as a donation from Beckenham Running Club. The money was raised from the proceeds of the Beckenham Charity 10k Trail Race held back in November 2010. Kate thanked the club and explained what £1000 means to the Hospice in relation to equipment and respite care that it will help to provide.
We also wish to thank again all the runners who took part in our race, which contributed to the money raised for this worthy cause.

@BeckenhamRC now on Twitter…
Posted by Nolan in Everything Else on January 24th, 2011
You may or may not have noticed there is now a twitter feed on the left hand side of the page. This is abit of an experiment with the aim to be able to able to share information on the club, the website and our races with members and the general public. There is already one follower! (and me!) Using this tool there is potential to access thousands of people who are already on twitter to publicise events and races, and just show off about how great our club is so people may want to join themselves…..I suspect most people won’t have a clue about twitter but feel free to follow the twitters that stem from it…. http://twitter.com/BeckenhamRC#
Maybe a step to far…we’ll see.
Benfleet 15
Posted by Nolan in Everything Else, Races & Reports on January 24th, 2011
The mud and hills of last weeks mob match against Blackheath and Bromley proved for some to be only a warm up for worse to come! The Benfleet 15 is probably the muddiest and boggiest of them all.

Davids looking too clean!
Well done to Ken, David and Paul F for surviving in one piece.

Blackheath and Bromley Open 10k
Posted by Nolan in Everything Else on December 18th, 2010
Ladies and Gentleman, your attention please……
I know Christmas hasn’t even been yet, but it’s now less than 4 weeks till the Blackheath and Bromley Open 10k, which is also the first race of the new Grand Prix 2011 season. (For those that haven’t done it before, it’s an off road race starting near Sparrows Den, Hayes and finishes near Keston).
The race is also a David v Goliath mob match between B&B and us! For the first time, the fixture will also feature a trophy (so I’ve been told) to be awarded to the winning team. So please could everyone and anyone no matter how fit your feeling following the Christmas excess, put in your diaries Saturday the 15th of January 2011, and turn out for your club so we can show them that we are a club not to be taken lightly!
As you were.

Beckenham Running Club 2010 Awards
Posted by Nolan in Club Events, Everything Else, Races & Reports on December 16th, 2010
2010 is fast drawing to a close, which meant that last night it was time for the annual glitzy gala award ceremony / Christmas Dinner! The well attended event gave everyone an opportunity to leave the sweaty lycra in the kit bag and dress up in their finest attire (except for Jim
) and reflect on the outstanding performances over the year. Congratulations to everyone who’s turned out for the club in 2010, and pushed themselves to the limit through the long winter, during scorching sunny days, over mud, sand, trail and roads….we cumulatively ran thousands of miles together as a club (I’d guess!)
So lets have a ripple of applause please for the following 2010 roll of honour.

South of the Thames XC: Wimbledon
Posted by Nolan in Cross Country, Everything Else on November 29th, 2010
There was also some proper high quality racing going on Saturday. In arctic conditions, Beckenham men just scraped together a mens team and came a respectable 10th out of 29th at the 5.3 miles race around Wimbledon Common. (The results below are incorrect so you’ll have to trust me that we were 10th!)
SOTT Results: Wimbledon, 5.3 Miles
Well done to the scorers Chris Minns, Jim Addison, Nolan Wilkens, Will Withecombe, and also the non scorers Andy Hinds, Mel Burdett and Nicky Howard….
The next race is at Coulsdon on the 18th December a 7.5 mile XC, please email me if you want to run. Nolan.wilkens@yahoo.com.
