Kent League Race 2 Tonbridge

Beckenham’s senior mens team finished a highly respectable 5th place at Saturdays 2nd Kent League race, scoring 107 points. We finished sandwiched between Blackheath and Bromley and Cambridge Harriers. The result probably ranks as one of our better outings in recent years thanks to a strong turn out for the men and the welcome addition of Carl Ferri and Stephen Thackeray to our ranks. The four scorers were also backed up by strong runs from Stuart and Will. It all bodes well for the future and hopefully a good showing at this years Kent Championships, please get back to me if you can run! Full Results

Club Championship – Petts Wood & Cross Country

Petts Wood 10k
For the second GP in a row, Jim finished in another impressive 2nd place, however the burning question on everyone’s lips, who was Stuart Slot? It seems abit of a misunderstanding meant that the men’s team prize slipped from under our noses thanks to registration problems. You win some you lose some. But in any case the ladies had a good turn out and won the women’s team prize with Helen maintaining her good form and finishing in 5th and 1st V45. Club Championship age grading results will be announced at the Christmas Dinner! Results
Kent League Cross Country Race 1.
Due to the ladies and most of the men, saving themselves for Sundays club championship at Petts Wood, there was a poor turnout for the 1st Kent League XC race in Swanley. But at least we were able to field a 4 man mens team. The course was fairly tame for a cross country race, ie pretty flat with no mud. The standard was very high so a 16th place for Chris Minns was a good run. Next up is the slightly more challenging hills of Tonbridge on the 29/10/11. Results

| A belated well done to those who took part in the Switchback 5, not sure why numbers were abit down on the usual for such a good value local race! But well done to Jim and Stephen (in his 1st race for us) who came 2nd and 3rd.

Will Bolton Relay 4x4k

Haven’t got time to go into a big write up of the Will Bolton 4x4k relay, but only to say well done to the Mens A for finishing a credible 7th overall and for the Ladies A team who finished 5th ladies team. The highlight of the day ended up being the duel between Gail (Ladies A team) and Andy H (Mens C team). They started their legs within a few seconds of each other, only for Gail to cross the line first running her leg only 1 second faster than Andy H! Full results. Beckenham Trail Race 13 November 2011

We are pleased to confirm that we will be holding our Charity 10k Trail race on Remembrance Sunday 13 November 2011. Due to the significance of the day proceeds of the race will be donated to the Royal British Legion and as a mark of respect the start is just after 11am following one minutes silence.
November 13th 2011 – Beckenham Charity Trail 10k
About the course:
An undulating, traffic-free, multi-terrain course of 2 laps, passing through some of the last remaining ancient woodland in London, at Beckenham Place Park.
- Measured 10k course, on tracks and paths through fields and woods; drinks stations;
- HQ at Beckenham Cricket Club, Foxgrove Road, BR3 5AS;
- Parking at HQ and nearby;
- Changing facilities and toilets at HQ;
- Medal to each finisher;
- Trophies in following categories:-
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Man and Lady,
- 1st Male Vet O/40, O/50, O/60,
- 1st Lady Vet O/35, O/45, O/55,
- 1st Men’s Team, 1st Ladies Team (3 to qualify).
Entry: £8.00 (Affiliated), £10.00 (others); entry available on the day (+£2), if limit of 250 is not reached.
Closing date for Postal Entries: 6th November 2011.
All are welcome to stay for Prize-giving at Race HQ, shortly after the race is over. Also, all runners are welcome back to HQ for a complimentary cup of tea and a cake (while supplies last). The club bar will be open by 12 noon.

Weekend Round Up!

With the on set of September there’s finally some race reports filtering in…. so over to Simon Harris.
Maidenhead Half Sun Sep 4th
After an early start for the first ever running of this race it began somewhat chaotic as the first 600 metres of the race
was a small loop that came back on itself meaning that runners were going past people who had not yet gone over the
start line which as you can imagine meant a very congested first mile as well as somewhat annoying.
Settling down into the race itself it was well supported by the locals who came out in force from their houses and cheered
us on which is always good to see as it certainly had a low key local feel to it. The route followed a somewhat scenic trail
which certainly took us to parts of Berkshire that we will probably never see again meandering through country lanes and
local roads before finishing up back in the town centre.
All was going well in terms of weather until mile 10 when the heavens opened and down came the rain. Always fun
as it seems to give that extra bite to the race as well as extra encouragement to finish…Grit your teeth, Get on with it etc.
Most other hardy soles i spoke to at the end liked it and i would probably do this again although the start needs to be sorted
out for next time.

Kent Marathon
Also running his umpteenth marathon was Ken Fancett who finished 2nd V60 in 3:18 at the Kent Marathon in Maaargate. I believe he ran a 100m (that’s miles!) race a couple of weeks of ago, so this must have been a doddle!

London to Paris Bike Ride
Inspired by Wiggins and Cav, Ken made his own claim for an Olympic team spot by riding 285 miles in 20hrs.. (plus 4 overnight stops) Ken texted the news desk to say:

Assembly League Race 6 of 6

Last night it was the final assembly league race of the year held at Beckenham. While both male and female teams have struggled to get enough people to form teams over the summer, it finished off with a flourish. Helen Garrett ran a solid race to finish the overall winner of the W45 catergory. Congrats Helen! If you take part in Helens track sessions, then you to could be a winner*

Club 1 mile championship

Thanks to Helen for arranging for Beckenham to take part in Blackheath and Bromleys club 1 mile race last night. Running a solitary mile for hardened 5k to marathoners was abit daunting for most, which was obvious from the sidelines, about half the club turned up but only to spectate! The competitors were Helen, Alice, Ok now WAVA King Chris, Simon, Steve Farrah, Andy Smalls, Steve Elliot and Ian McCarthy..(have I missed anyone?) who all gave a magnificent account of themselves… the results aren’t up yet but 1st Beck Lady Helen in 5:55 and 1st Beck Man Ok now WAVA King Chris in 5:05. Quote of the night…Ian McCarthy “where’s the water station?”
Well done to the runners who’ve put the rest of us to shame but we will definitely be there in running force next time!

Henfield Half Marathon

Yesterday, seven of us headed down towards the south coast to take part in the Henfield Half marathon. The sun was beaming down, so the sun cream was being applied liberally on all exposed areas ready for the 10:30 start. We got off on time, and headed round the 13 mile figure of eight circuit, making full use of the various water stops.
Although 7 of us started the race, only 5 were classified at the finish. Our leading 2 runners, OK Chris and Stuart were misdirected by an arrow marker, so they went from mile 8 to mile 12 without passing 9,10,11 or collecting £200. They entered the grounds of the leisure centre finishing point having only done around 10 miles so didn’t cross the finish line or collect a medal. Well done to Debbie on her first half marathon, not the easiest of temperatures or terrain so they can only get easier!.

Beckenham Group Email

Hello everyone, it’s been a quiet summer on the running front with not much going on as everyone seems to be on holiday…( although a few are off to the Henfield Half Marathon today, hopefully more on that tomorrow!)
So time for alittle bit of house keeping. I think there’s been a problem with subscribing to our email, as in I haven’t received any notifications of people wanting to join!
