BECKENHAM RUNNING CLUB

Offas Dyke

10th July 2005

176 Miles, and supposed to take two weeks. Beckenham Running Club relay it in 36 hours. Here's the weekend report by Ken Baksh. And Craig says "You should have Theunis and Neil in your special mentions as they stepped in and did an extra 4 mile leg in pitch darkness when it was looking a bit touch and go at 2am Sunday morning." And it seems Mick and Stuart did a pretty heroic night-time run as well. In fact well done everyone!

Ken says....
A very intrepid, determined and focused team from our beloved Beckenham Running club have just completed the feat in 36 hours and I warmly congratulate every runner and helper for aiding me in making this possible-a huge achievement for our small but rapidly growing Club. Despite numerous setbacks and even Al Qaeda's efforts which indirectly took out two of my team at the 12th hour the baton survived the journey from Bristol Channel to Irish Sea in record temperatures over mountains and valleys.

I hope that team leader/individuals may contribute to a diary....The Longest Day...and any photos etc while still fresh in mind.

While sitting in motorway traffic on Monday morning, John and I made the following observations;;most in the form of a 'who did it/said and why' quiz which may evoke memories of the adventure. Please feel free to add...as I am sure there are many more that spring to mind....it made us chuckle anyway. Purely for fun and no offence meant!

GENERAL-Are you there....can you hear me....say that again............thanks to Vodafone,O2 etc

" Navigation okay but running in the heat is tough"

" Think I can see Steve through the binoculars.....sorry it's a cow"

" Ken, when you said undulating and persuaded me to run....I wasn't expecting..."

Who appeared in a graveyard, performed an athletic baton catch and disappeared in a flash?

" Difficult to use compass in L shaped field when 5 metre visibility"

" Think we will be out 2 hour 40.......no we can do better than that! " 4 hours later...

Isn't he/she supposed to be running in from the opposite direction?

" I was all right until they changed the colour of the acorn"

"Nearly at the top of the hill...........oh no....

" Bet the baton could tell a good story"

" Anyone seen the running vest I left on the land rover to dry out?"---now degrading on the Brockweir/redbrro road RIP"

"Did you know that there were 612 stiles along the route?"

" the Wayne chav joke"

On the use of compasses-"suppose we could navigate by the sun...but it moves...doesn't it?"

KNIGHTON CHURCH HALL

Shower man----Who tried to turn basin into en-suite shower?

Who was the bird sleeping in the kitchen?

Who heard every clock chime every hour?

Finally.....who was the phantom snorer?

NATURE STUDY

Hope you all spotted the Buzzards, crows, swallows, rabbits, llamas (just found out reason), shrews and ...........sheep

Border Collies-"the bastard bit me"

Horse Flies- "ditto..... in sensitive area"

Who identified 4 species of grass within a one metre square area?

"Herd of cows made me swerve off course"

FOOD AND DRINK

" Anyone for tea?"

"Anyone for cereal bars or Kipling Cakes or that cheese sandwich (again)"

" I fell asleep eating a kebab"

DRIVING/NAVIGATION

"Is Penrhos Farm the same as Penrhos?"

"On driving on narrow mountain roads, size matters"

"Why are we part of Abergavenny carnival when ten minutes to changeover?"

"Not another......xxxxxx tractor driving in front"

"Why are we following that little old lady into the superstore car park?"

"Sorry guys...made a mistake....went to Bron-heulog instead of Bryn-oerog.....silly language"

Driver to passenger after hurtling down a narrow mountain pass "Can i let you into a secret?"

PERSONAL

"I am going to start at the end of Lea-Ann's leg and work backwards"

"Have you noticed the high percentage of large breasted women in this area"

Finally the Ken and John awards for sheer grit and determination. It was apparent to John and myself that every single runner started their respective leg in a tense nervous manner and wanted to make it happen for the team-Everybody was a winner......but special votes to....
Steven-For doing the best part of a Roger Black relay leg run to Knighton clock tower to make up time

Craig and Mick-For running extra legs at very short notice...particularly in the closing stages -Mick -your fourth stage of 5 miles was a project saver-well done!

Steve Elliott-team for encouraging Nikki at every accessible junction on a very tough and hot stage of course

Lee-Ann for tackling three 400 metre peaks in a row, nearly collapsing from the heat

Lawrence-What can we say-still recovering from injury one month ago...two of the toughest climbs in the book at record pace and still had time to fall over!

FINALLY

Please send your contributions

Mick suggested that we should engrave the baton in some way and keep at the club....committee....any thoughts?

John suggested we use the baton as a basis for "The BRC BATON CHALLENGE" an annual prize for organizing/partaking big team projects e.g. Alderney, Offa's Dyke, next year? Any thoughts

And those pics just kept on coming....
