Parkrun mob match alert

Just a reminder that on the 2nd of April, Beckenham are going to take on our neighbours  Petts Wood and Orpington in a 3 way mob match. The race will take place at Norman Park over the 5k parkrun course.

We had a massive turn out for the last mob match we took part in against Blackheath and Bromley and ran them really close. It would be fantastic to try and match that again and this time win! If you haven’t run a parkrun before you need to register on the site and print off your barcode. Easy.

And to motivate you all to turn out here’s a GCSE course work style poster!

….and then to the Stinger

More racing news to report…it’s almost a full time job in itself keeping up with you lot!

Ken Fancett continued his rehabilitation from last years knee problems by running in the Steyning Stinger Marathon, so named after the hills I believe… Ken finished in 13th place in 3:43:20.

Weekend racing news…From Bath to Greenwich to Battersea & ESSEX

Loads of races this weekend and lots of great performances….

Bath Half Marathon

The Bath Half Marathon PB fest…. David Scrimshaw reports.

Just fresh from finishing the Bath Half Marathon this morning in sunny Bath – and I believe we have a 100% PB return to report!

There was myself and my good wife running as well as Mr Addison leading the way as usual!

The race was fantastic – well organised, well supported and a thouroughly enjoyable one throughout. It was a pretty quick course with plenty of nice flat sections and every uphill section counter balanced with a good long down hill section to open up on straight after. Preliminary results as follows (all from our Garmins as results not on line yet):

Amy in with a 1hr 57min 37sec – a good 1 minute under her previous PB despite her intentions to just go out and ‘jog it’!
I clocked a not to shabby 1hr 24min 20sec – a good 4 minutes under my previous PB for the distance!
Jim I believe hit 1hr 14mins on the head which again I believe is a PB for Mr Addison and gets him free entry into the race for next year!

Altogether a pretty good return for the Beckenham massive!

EDIT: Also running with Mr Addison was Mrs Addison, who clocked 1:58:01

Greenwich 10k

Abit closer to home at the Greenwich 10k organised by Cambridge Harriers,  Helen and Ed Osbourne were Beckenhams sole representatives. here’s Helen’s report….

This was the second of the races I’d entered individually. This time Ed Osbourne was also running so I wasn’t the only Beckenham Runner. I’d run a few good track sessions recently so was hoping for a reasonable time. The weather was cold and windy when I got there and despite a good warm up could feel the cold most of the way round. This was the third time I’ve run the race but am still fooled by hard the hill is to run up, especially the seconf time around, the downs don’t seem to compensate for the ups!

Ed ran well with a finish time of 40:43 (chip of 40:41) in 37th place. I finished with 43:45 (9th lady, 3rd FV45), slower than I wanted but was happy with my race position. I know the race is expensive but it is well organised, has a good field of runners and a nice setting in Greenwich Park.  Also good for support for me from the marshalls too as it’s run by Cambridge Harriers my second claim club!

37 Ed Osbourne 40:43

71 Helen Garrett 43:47  (and 3rd V45…go Helen!)

Sri Chimony 10 Mile

I must be nuts, was the thought that went through my head when my alarm went off at 6am on Saturday.  I ran to Battersea Park for an 8am start for the Sri Chimnoy 10 mile race. They’ve livened up the course abit this year. It was previously 6 laps of the park, now it’s 2 little laps and 4 big laps..whoop. But it if you have the memory of gold fish (like me) then running around the same laps again and again isn’t too bad and quite helps with pacing. Although running past the finish line 5 times before you’re allowed to stop is a mental challenge. End result was 1:03:19 and 18th place and 20 miles run before breakfast (smug, smug!) But the best thing about the race… tomato soup at the end!

And finally …(for now..unless other racing news filters in…)

Essex 20

Sophie and Anika continued their marathon training by running the Essex 20, Sophie finished her run in 2:40:14, with Anika not too far behind in 2:46:17.

Next week, the Knole Park 10k, the 3rd GP race of the year….

Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon

A healthy turn out of Beckenham runners took on this tough half marathon yesterday.  Chris Minns proved that despite getting older and now having kids he is still able to get faster!

Chris writes:

‘I ran the Tunbridge Wells half this morning, coming 5th in 1:13:26.  I was hoping to go a bit faster, but that is (finally!) a new best time, beating the old mark from May 1997.  I saw Ken F. and Ian there, apparently Georgina ran as well but didn’t bump into her.

Tough course, but perfect conditions and a good pack to run with.  I couldn’t get back on 1:12 pace after the hills up to 8.5 miles, so it is pretty clear what I need to work on before Paddock Wood.’

Chris also managed to do what Jim did last year at Wokingham and beat 1st lady Olympian Liz Yelling! (1:13:56)

Beckenham Results:

5 Chris Minns 1:13:26

67 Richard Selway 1:24:43

186 Ken Fancett 1:30:57 (3rd V60)

693 Georgina Selway 1:44:46

820 Andrea Sullivan 1:47:21

1256 Ian McCarthy 1:58:04

Beckenham parkrun Treble

A slow weekend of not alot going on racing wise, meant that it was back to marathon esq long runs or hiding under the duvet instead of facing the bleakest of grey days on Sunday.

So parkrun provides the inspiration for this weeks racing news…..

Jim made it win no.20 at Bromley parkrun in a close finish with unattached harrier Stephen Thackeray, and last weeks winner Richard Selway in 3rd. That puts Jim in about 22nd place on the most wins list on the main parkrun website…. 22 wins out of 29, not a bad return.

Mel B made it a Beckenham double by being 1st lady in 20:48 and adding to her impressive wins total also.

There were a number of other Beckenham runners out but a run to note was by Deborah Ford who despite the soggy conditions got a parkrun PB.

I’ve given up hope of winning at Bromley when Jim’s about as he selfishly hogs all the glory 😉 so I went to Crystal Palace parkrun instead.  The rain obviously kept all the sensitive greyhounds away as I was able to win.  Thats 2 wins in 2, I’m coming to get you Addison, yeah!

Love is in the air…

Valentines day, a day when couples up and down the country celebrated their love for each other, or got into trouble for not buying flowers (ahem!), or for not taking their loved ones to a restaurant (double ahem!). I mean who want’s to be squeezed on to a romantic table for 2, for just you and your valentine….and the couple two inches away either side who can hear all of your sweet nothings….Sainsbury’s £15 valentines meal deal was excellent value instead for my lucky lady.

Instead of feeling sorry for themselves and going into hiding, a group of the running clubs singletons made a point of smacking valentines night in the mouth with a right hook, and went out for a group run instead. Dressed in pink and red they pointed and laughed at couples and how contrived and false it all looked in the restaurants of Beckenham. Yeah!

Meanwhile Richard and Georgina Selway took part in the Bromley Park Run on Saturday, which was hosting the Valentines Love Run. Not only did Richard take 1st place, he and Georgina also won the ‘Love Run’ category for affiliated runners. Guess you can’t argue about their qualification for the category, parkrun had made a point that Clare Elms and Jim were not allowed to form some sort of uber parkrun couple just for the competition.

Richard Selway

And finally to round off this special belated Valentines post, good luck for the weekend to David Scrimshaw and Amy Bhandari who are tying the knot up in the Lake District.  Congratulations and best wishes for a happy future together from all at Beckenham Running Club.

Handicap 2011 – Feb

After a drab ending last year thanks to the snow, the winter break seems to have invigorated the attendance for the 1st race of 2011. A whopping 28 runners took part, which surprisingly yeilded only 6 PB’s. A case of tactical running? Hmmmmmm.

Well done to Emma V who took 1st place and therefore leads this years competition, she was followed in by Debbie with Jim storming up the rear….
