Many thanks to everyone who ran in todays 10k trail race which was raced in fantastic sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures. A full set of provisional results are now available BRC 10K Trail Race 2011.
This year the race was held on Rememberance Sunday and proceeds from the excellent turnout will be donated to the Royal British Legion. A special thanks goes to the winning Blackheath and Bromley mens team who donated their cash prize to the charity. Also now available are Tom Simpsons photographs of the race, just click on the picture below.
The organization for the starting pens was very slick as we lined up in Upper Fitzwilliam Street for the start.
I chose an orange pen (sub 3:30 ) placing myself midway in that group,
We trundled forward towards the start line in Dublin’s fair city on a dull but warmish morning, temperature around 12c.
The first two miles or so were meandered around the city roads but annoyingly kept coming to a logjam where some of the twists and turns slowed the runners down.
Once mile three had arrived the roads were longer and straighter and i decided to tag along with the 3:15 pacer as he had a giant orange balloon tied to him I thought that this might be the safest way to stop me from getting lost. Passed six mile mark in 42 minutes by this time we had reached Phoenix Park. The group I was running with were still quite bunched so much so that a few competitors tripped up over the speed bumps in the roads.
Still with the 3:15 balloon at ten miles I was starting to get slightly miffed that the big orange orb kept hitting me on the head about every 3-4 paces so decided to try and quicken up reaching 13 miles in 1:32 ish just about spot on for the time I was looking for.
Stopped at 15 miles for a call of nature ( mostly due to bombing to much free water and energy drinks inside me) I was running alongside another bod who looked like he was a seasoned runner, he had a better idea. The runner in question had carbo gels cross strapped all over his body in the same way the Mexicans had their bullets in old wild west films.
So back to the race; after my comfort break I managed about another half mile and the legs gave out. Noooo your having a giraffe, still 11 miles to go!!
So 11 miles of run, jog, walk, well at least it gave me a chance to take in the sights as i finally slumped over the line in 3:26.
I feel better for the experience and may even do another marathon some day.
For those wishing to do Dublin Marathon, its well supported by the crowds, well organized, fairly urban with a Phoenix Park insert and undulating but no big hills. A bit expensive to enter though 70 euros minimum.
Keep on running,
OK Chris
Just a reminder that the tonight is the penultimate handicap race of the year. I’ve just put up the tables on the website (sorry for the delay, been abit busy!)….
Beckenham’s senior mens team finished a highly respectable 5th place at Saturdays 2nd Kent League race, scoring 107 points. We finished sandwiched between Blackheath and Bromley and Cambridge Harriers. The result probably ranks as one of our better outings in recent years thanks to a strong turn out for the men and the welcome addition of Carl Ferri and Stephen Thackeray to our ranks. The four scorers were also backed up by strong runs from Stuart and Will. It all bodes well for the future and hopefully a good showing at this years Kent Championships, please get back to me if you can run! Full Results

The next race is the womens only at Danson Park 12 November, with the next mens race at Sparrows Den 3 December.
Petts Wood 10k
For the second GP in a row, Jim finished in another impressive 2nd place, however the burning question on everyone’s lips, who was Stuart Slot? It seems abit of a misunderstanding meant that the men’s team prize slipped from under our noses thanks to registration problems. You win some you lose some. But in any case the ladies had a good turn out and won the women’s team prize with Helen maintaining her good form and finishing in 5th and 1st V45. Club Championship age grading results will be announced at the Christmas Dinner! Results
Kent League Cross Country Race 1.
Due to the ladies and most of the men, saving themselves for Sundays club championship at Petts Wood, there was a poor turnout for the 1st Kent League XC race in Swanley. But at least we were able to field a 4 man mens team. The course was fairly tame for a cross country race, ie pretty flat with no mud. The standard was very high so a 16th place for Chris Minns was a good run. Next up is the slightly more challenging hills of Tonbridge on the 29/10/11. Results
| A belated well done to those who took part in the Switchback 5, not sure why numbers were abit down on the usual for such a good value local race! But well done to Jim and Stephen (in his 1st race for us) who came 2nd and 3rd.

Haven’t got time to go into a big write up of the Will Bolton 4x4k relay, but only to say well done to the Mens A for finishing a credible 7th overall and for the Ladies A team who finished 5th ladies team. The highlight of the day ended up being the duel between Gail (Ladies A team) and Andy H (Mens C team). They started their legs within a few seconds of each other, only for Gail to cross the line first running her leg only 1 second faster than Andy H! Full results. Click on the photo below for some snaps from the day, unfortunately no 1st leg runners appear as I couldn’t race and photograph at the same time!

With the on set of September there’s finally some race reports filtering in…. so over to Simon Harris.
Maidenhead Half Sun Sep 4th
After an early start for the first ever running of this race it began somewhat chaotic as the first 600 metres of the race
was a small loop that came back on itself meaning that runners were going past people who had not yet gone over the
start line which as you can imagine meant a very congested first mile as well as somewhat annoying.
Settling down into the race itself it was well supported by the locals who came out in force from their houses and cheered
us on which is always good to see as it certainly had a low key local feel to it. The route followed a somewhat scenic trail
which certainly took us to parts of Berkshire that we will probably never see again meandering through country lanes and
local roads before finishing up back in the town centre.
All was going well in terms of weather until mile 10 when the heavens opened and down came the rain. Always fun
as it seems to give that extra bite to the race as well as extra encouragement to finish…Grit your teeth, Get on with it etc.
Most other hardy soles i spoke to at the end liked it and i would probably do this again although the start needs to be sorted
out for next time.

Kent Marathon
Also running his umpteenth marathon was Ken Fancett who finished 2nd V60 in 3:18 at the Kent Marathon in Maaargate. I believe he ran a 100m (that’s miles!) race a couple of weeks of ago, so this must have been a doddle!

London to Paris Bike Ride
Inspired by Wiggins and Cav, Ken made his own claim for an Olympic team spot by riding 285 miles in 20hrs.. (plus 4 overnight stops) Ken texted the news desk to say:
Ken Baksh and Tony Bagwell have just completed the London to Paris cycle ride, covering the 285 miles in just over 20 hours. Many Thanks to all sponsors. Garmin indicates energy consumed of 32,000 calories – roll on Wednesday’s Works Burger(s)

And if you wondered why Andy and Nicky looked in paticular pain around the assembly course on Thursday, it’s because they were climbing mountains that morning 🙂
Nice to see Andy Small continuing the theme of spreading the gospel of Beckenham far and wide……
